Isn’t Every Business a Lifestyle Business?

I remember years ago talking with a group of entrepreneurs and hearing them use the phrase “lifestyle business” as a negative.

I guess at some point there was a time when I felt a tiny notion of that sentiment.

But lately, especially as I get 15 years into the journey of entrepreneurship, my notion is that, wait … isn’t every business ultimately a lifestyle business?!

The people who do startups aiming for unicorns … don’t they have a lifestyle in mind that they want?

Maybe it’s not traveling across the globe, getting paid as a travel blogger …. but the end of the rainbow for them is something, a la a big payday or working on something bigger.

Isn’t it all ultimately about the life we want?

In my previous business, my “lifestyle business” formula was doing good work, with great people, and getting paid well for it.

Today, it’s pretty much the same …. except I’ve added one more …. to increase the value of that business that helps me when it inevitably ends for me. The inevitable exit part.

Because all things do.

Anyway, I digress.

The current notion I have is … it’s all lifestyle.

As an entrepreneur, you should get what you want out of it … even if that’s a huge payday, or just to do good work and get paid well. Or a combination of all three.

It’s the toughest professional job I’ve ever had. Period. Huge ups. Huge downs. The roller coaster.

Why shouldn’t it be exactly what I want.
