Over time riding the roller coaster of leadership and entrepreneurship, I started repeating a mantra:
Never waste a crisis
Too often we’d get bogged down in the reality of the crisis at hand, understandably.
But every crisis has an opportunity in it.
A crisis is something I think we humans sometimes need to actually evolve … and comes with an opportunity buried in it …. for a positive change.
The seed of it is the something better for us. And it’s hope. Something new and different that is better than what was before. That helps us keep moving, keep stepping forward.
Examples ….
- Mentioned previously in a LinkedIn post here — the “Does iThemes still exist?” tweet I saw in 2010 …. it spurred us to aim for and become the most personable humans in WordPress, doing live streams from couches for product launches, a weekly live stream with chat to “talk” to our customers. And our whole “customer community” ethos was born from that one “crisis” tweet.
- When we got hacked — it brought our team together … it deepened our “whatever it takes, together” mindset …. and it spurred us to deepen our humanness into “openness” by disclosing it publicly and broadly. And it earned us trust and respect.
