On Building a Great Team

Over the years, I’ve dreamed of having the opportunity to put together a rockin’ team of the best people in their respective areas … and, then, to be able to create an environment where they could thrive and be fulfilled in what they do.

This week, we flew in our remote staff to Oklahoma City, where iThemes is based, for our first company retreat. It was the first time we were all in the same place and I got to see a glimpse of that dream of building a great team come true.

Along the way, I would put roles and responsibilities on my office writeboard of key personnel as we grew … I would dream of what those positions would look like and do and where they would help us go.

Often, I would put names next to those positions.

And now, I can say we’ve got all the core people to be able to do what we want to do — a base team to build a great, enduring, prospering company.

Customer Service and ‘Going the Extra Mile’ Marketing

One of our themes has been a little tough to explain to certain buyers — our Ecommerce Theme. It’s hard I think simply because it’s an educational process of trying to explain that it’s simply a web template designed to look and feel like an online store and allow users to use WordPress to create and manage their storefronts.

Whoa, that’s a lot of explainer … and I have to admit, for a lot of these emails it’s explaining to our prospective customers what and how ecommerce itself works.

(And yes, I’m working on a better sales site that helps the customer and also so I’m not answering the same questions over and over and over again.)

3 Reasons Why Content is Priceless

…. or maybe it’s just gold.

But whatever you say about “content” …. text-based, practical, highly-readable, linkbait-able writing … it’s worth more than people suspect.

After more than four months of advertising online and two years of blogging personally, I’ve realized our advertising money would be better spent developing our own content, on our own sites.
